Tuna and sesame rice balls , also known as onigiri , are a delicious , portable snack inspired by Japanese sushi culture . These savory rice balls combine the umami richness of tuna with the nutty crunch of sesame seeds , making them perfect for a quick lunch , picnic , or appetizer . Ingredients :(Makes 6-8 Rice Balls)

2 cups sushi rice (short-grain Japanese rice)

2 ½ cups water

One 5-ounce can of water-packed tuna , drained

2 tablespoons mayonnaise

1 tablespoon soy sauce

1 teaspoon sesame oil

2 tablespoons toasted sesame seeds

One sheet of nori (seaweed), thinly sliced

1 teaspoon rice vinegar

1 teaspoon sugar

½ teaspoon salt

Equipment :

Rice cooker or medium saucepan

Small mixing bowl

Plastic wrap or onigiri mold

Clean hands or gloves for shaping

Method :

Step 1 : Cook the Sushi Rice

Rinse the sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear to remove excess starch.

In a saucepan or rice cooker , combine the rice and water . Cook according to the rice cooker instructions or bring to a boil , then simmer for 12-15 minutes until the water is absorbed.

Dissolve the salt , suger , and rice vinegar in a small basin . to season the cooked rice , gently fold in this mixture . Let the rice cool slightly.

Step 2 : Prepare the Tuna Filling

In a small mixing bowl , combine the drained tuna , mayonnaise , soy sauce , and sesame oil . Mix until well blended.

Taste and adjust seasoning if needed , adding a pinch of salt or more sovy sauce for extra flavor.

Step 3 : Shape the Rice Balls

Wet your hands with water to prevent sticking , or use plastic warp or an onigiri mold.

Flatten a small handful (about ¼ cup) of sushi rice in your palm.

Cover with another small portion of rice and gently shape into a ball or triangle , pressing firmly to hold the shape.

Make 6-8 rice balls by repeating until all of the rice and filling has been utilized.

Step 4 : Add Sesame and Nori

To gently cover the outside of each rice ball , roll it in toasted sesame seeds.

Warp a strip of nori around the base or side of each rice ball for added flavor and texture.

Step 5 : Serve and Enjoy

The tuna and sesame rice balls may be served right away or made into a portable snack by wrapping them in plastic warp.
